DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES (DEMS)
BACKGROUND OF THE DEPARTMENT
The department of development and environmental studies (DEMS) is one of the prominent centers of excellence in university of Gondar. The department has been launched in the year 2005 both in the regular program and extension program and successfully graduated the first batch in the year 2008/09 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in development and environmental studies. Since its establishment the department has maintained top notch performance which earned recognition from the UNEP and award for first mainstreaming environmental and sustainability in to Africa (MESA) university partnership competing with one hundred twenty four universities.
The research area/interest of the department includes environmental protection, land administration, sustainable natural resource management, sustainable development, forest management, water supply and sanitation and sustainable development
A total of threeten staff members are currently working in the department in this academic year 2016/2017. Eight of them are lecturers with second degree holders, two of them are PhD holders. The department has sent three staff members for further education both of them are second degree holders who are studying their PhD in UNISA and Addis Ababa University.
