Livestock Farms in the University of Gondar
University of Gondar livestock farms have emerged as new farms in 2009 G.C. by financial aid of DIF (Development innovative fund). The farm was started by 40 cattle, 1000 poultry and 10 lab animals. Even though written documents were not found the history of dairy and poultry farms have begun in 1976 G.C. The resent Haromaya University, then Alemaya College of Agriculture of Addis Ababa University, had established poultry and dairy farms for research purpose in Gondar. Following the phasing out of the research project in 1986 G.C. the ownership of the farms transferred from Alemaya College of agriculture to the present college of medicine of Gondar University, then the poultry farm closed and the dairy farm objective revised from research to the production of milk to patients admitted to Gondar Hospital. In 2009 G.C.
Faculty of veterinary medicine of Gondar University establishes a new poultry, dairy and laboratory farms by DIF project support. Almost all old dairy farm animals and equipment were culled and all workers and some ruminant animals (only 8 cattle) and equipment transferred to the newly established farm. There are three farms at present i.e. Laboratory animals, dairy and poultry. Lab animal farm is operating with 35 Laboratory mice, 4 rabbits, 5 cats and 5 dogs. In dairy farms there are 36 cows (of which 26 are lactating and the other 10 are dry cows), 27 heifers and 28 calves including the fattening. In poultry farm there are a total of 191 chickens all are layers.
The farm tries to incorporate the practical aspect of more animal and veterinary sciences in practice through time. For example the extent of dairy science application in dairy farm at the beginning of 2010 had been 58% and increased at the end of the year to 66.67%.
Instructors from applied science faculty and college of medicine have repeatedly used our lab animal of the farm to take blood samples (Getachew, 2012).
Distributions of day old chicken and cross breed heifers were the activity planned for community service. Though these were not achieved due to lack of poultry parent stock and small herd size, university community has benefited from supply of animal product with subsidized price.
We have 312 milk beneficiaries and the farm supplied 122,663 eggs. It is about 20 eggs per month throughout the year for 511 people.
Seventy four persons also benefited from the supply of chicken produced for incubator testing. University of Gondar livestock farms have emerged as new farms in 2009 G.C.
