Pediatric Hematology Oncology Unit Organizes Stakeholder Engagement Workshop and Project Kick off for the planned project on Capacity Building for Early Detection of Childhood Cancer
Dr. Aynishet Adane, the Chief Executive Officer of the University of Gondar’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences and Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, explained at the opening of the workshop that collaboration among all stakeholders is necessary for treating childhood cancer and effecting meaningful change. He informed the participants that this workshop is the first in a series of capacity-building sessions to come, and they will gain valuable information to raise public awareness about the disease.
Dr. Mulugeta Ayalew, a Pediatric Hematologist Oncologist at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital and the coordinator of the Pfizer project, emphasized that childhood cancer is a global concern. Developed nations have successfully raised awareness about cancer in their communities and controlled its spread, while poorer countries struggle to diagnose cancer early. Even after diagnosis, these countries fail to prevent children’s deaths due to delays in cancer treatment. The workshop is sponsored by Pfizer Inc. to address this gap.
Dr. Mequanint Melesse, the Chief Clinical Director at the university, added that the University of Gondar’s cancer treatment center is the first of its kind in the Amhara region. The center is staffed by renowned experts and researchers who dedicate their time and energy to conducting research and fundraising activities aimed at creating awareness in society.
Mr. Assefa Admasu presented the findings of a research conducted at the University of Gondar, explaining the harm caused to children by the lack of early cancer diagnosis.
The event took place on May 13, 2024, on the campus of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences. Participants included heads of health facilities in the Central Gondar Zone and relevant organizations.
