The United States Ambassador Visits the University of Gondar
Today on 20 July 2022 the Ambassador of the United States Tracey Ann Jacobson visited the University of Gondar and was hosted by the President of the University Dr. Asrat Atsedeweyn. The President gave the Ambassador a tour of the outpatient hospital which was fully funded by the US Government. They were able to tour key areas of disease control which included Anti-retro Virial offices, units and other state of the art facilities.

It is well known that the United States was a leading contributor in the inception and establishment of the University of Gondar. With a project called the 4-point program they saw the pressing health needs during the 1950’s and worked tirelessly to establish a public health and training center in the area to fight the malaria pandemic that was rampant during that time.

And now 68 years later, the United States is still holding true to its commitment to the University of Gondar. The United States and University of Gondar relationship could be measured by the 9.2 million USD Comprehensive Specialized Hospital which was financed by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The outpatient hospital that the Ambassador took a tour of was inaugurated around 7 years ago and is a facility that caters to a catchment area of 20 million people of the region. It could be observed that the state-of-the-art building has been a life saver in the Gondar community.

Some of the other forward thinking initiatives that the US Government has engaged in with the University of Gondar include the Ambassadors Distinguished Scholars Program, National Debate Competition, Media Literacy, American Corners project, ART training, Mandela Fellowship, YALI and various funding in the health sector that is estimated at 5 million USD.
