UoG Confers Honorary Doctorate Degrees to Two Distinguished Ethiopian Fellows-Artist Mahmud Ahmed and Dr. Ambaye W/Michael
University of Gondar (UoG) conferred its highest recognition honorary doctorate degree award reflecting one of its broad missions (to recognize individuals who have attained achievements of extraordinary and lasting distinction), to two famous Ethiopian fellows- the popular artist Mohamed Ahmed (King of Tizita, Earl of Africa, Living legend, Soul of Addis…) and the famous international obstetric fistula surgeon-Dr. Ambaye W/Michael (Mother of mothers, …), at the commencement of this year’s graduation ceremony held on July 4, 2015
The University graduated 6416 students with first, second and doctoral degree. The speaker of the house of federation, his Excellency Mr. Kassa Teklebirhan handed over the degrees to the delegate of Mehamud Ahmed, Dr. Ambaye W/Michael and graduates of the year.
The Honorary Doctorate Degree was offered to Mehamud Ahmed in recognition for his being one of the leading artists who contributed many musical works marking time and memory for five decades; for the diplomatic role and contribution he made in Popularizing his nation and its music to the international community; for his relentless support and love to the people of Ethiopia, for his contribution in sustaining, cultivating transferring the modern Ethiopian music art to the upcoming generation, for his instructive life endurance proving that any thing can be possible to the new generation, e.t.c. Mehamud got this honorary doctorate degree from UoG only fortnights after he celebrated his 50th year anniversary of his career at Addis Ababa: June 15, 2015 – at a program hosted in Sheraton Addis, during which he was awarded a trophy as well as five million Birr from sheikh Al Amoudi.
Similarly, the Honorary Doctorate Degree was presented to Dr. Ambaye for her remarkable contributions in fighting Obstetric fistula, as a chief international surgeon for more than 20 years, during which she managed to revive hopes of 5000 women and girls who were affected by obstetric fistula by performing surgical operations; and associated humanitarian and philanthropic roles she played throughout her career.
UoG believes this award helps the recipients to take the initial steps towards betterment of self and the society. An essential way in which we serve is literally to recognize the accomplishments of those deserving individuals in order that they may go on in their own ways to make a contribution to the communities and societies both locally and internationally.
