Laparoscopic Surgery: Revolutionizing Gynecologic Medical Services at UoG’s Teaching Hospital
The latest world-class gynecologic diagnosis and treatment laparoscopy technology that University of Gondar (UoG) teaching hospital introduced recently,can be considered as an evidence for the university is in the time to invade the impossible, and revolutionize its overall services to the general public.
Over the past couple of decades, the procedures of surgery have been refined to a remarkable level. One of these developments is on Gynecologic laparoscopy surgery “which is an alternative to open surgery that uses a laparoscope to look inside pelvic area. Open surgery often requires a large incision. A laparoscope is a slender, lighted telescope that allows the doctor to see inside the body of the patient. As a form of treatment. With miniaturized instruments, the doctor can perform a variety of surgeries, without opening the body as wider as in the case of open surgery”. Experts in the area explain that “Laparoscopy generally has a shorter healing time than open surgery. It also leaves smaller scars. A gynecologist, general surgeon, or another type of specialist may perform this procedure.”
In Ethiopia, where there is the highest rate of both mother and child mortality in connection with birth, the realization of such high-tech, quality medical services locally would undoubtedly be a sighing relief and hope for millions of the local mothers and people.
The idea of introducing this latest technology in UoG was initiated and realizedmainly by the relentless efforts of one of the University’s former staff, Dr. Nuru Abseno who is currently working as a gynecologist in Providence Hospital, Washington DC, USA. Dr. Nuru Abeseno, an alumni, of University of Gondar, worked as gynecologist and medical director in the University’s teaching hospital before he left Ethiopia. However, his heart never left his mother institution. He was with us during the 60th anniversary of UoG, during which he advised and convinced the top management to introduce this latest gynecologic laparoscopy equipment. Immediately after the equipment was bought by the University, as he promised by then,Dr. Nuru was here in UoG’s teaching hospital recently from May8-12, 2016, with his famous colleague in the area, Dr. John George, to train the technicalities of the equipment to the hospital’s staff. During their five days stay, Dr. Nuru and his colleague treated patients with a variety of problems using the newly bought laparoscopy machine while training the gynecology department staff of the University. Both fellows explained during the occasion that they will not stop their support until UoG’s staff could be able to work independently and effectively on this specific type of surgery. The introduction of this laparoscopic surgery medication, which is the first of its kind locally, as commented by the two guests would probably raise university of Gondar’s teaching hospital to a center of excellence level in such kind of medication.
Dr. Getachew Shiferaw, delegate head of the University’s gynecology departmentin his part commented that the laparoscopy surgery technology introduced will revolutionize the service that his department would be giving to the public. Dr. Getachew also acknowledged the highest contribution made by Dr. Nuru and his colleague, Dr. George to realize this advanced technological service in the teaching hospital.
