University of Gondar held a National Workshop

University of Gondar held a workshop focusing on Informatics, more specifically on information systems on the 4th of March at Ruth Hotel. The event comprised of the stakeholders from both the private and the government sectors.
To start the workshop, the dean of informatics, Mr. Tewodros Alemu, Welcomed Everyone with warm salutations and grace assuring that there is much to touch on that day. The main points he touched dealt with I.S in the Ethiopian context and the need for the nation to elevate their stance on the topic and utilize beyond its present sphere. The next point for discussion was the overwhelming desire mentioned by Mr. Tewodros Alemu; to work together: Private sector and Government. The two, he said, should use I.S in their dealings to better the probability of success in whatever form it may come in.

The President of the University of Gondar, Dr. Desalegn Mengesha, in his opening speech, emphasized the need to incorporate information systems for the betterment of our country, Ethiopia. The President said, “The outside world, Europe for example, have used I.S to grow. With the use of it, benefits that are statistically observed and leading to a prosperous future has come”. After his words of appreciation, Dr. Desalegn thanked the University community and research presenters for their hard work and dedication in the field of information systems.

The Keynote speaker, technical advisor to the ministry of communication and information technology, Mesfin Belachew (PhD), following the President’s speech portrayed Ethiopia’s great flourish in information systems and the detail of its importance. Applause following his speech was felt in the venue. Following the keynote speaker, there was a session where intellectuals from different sectors in Ethiopia presented researches on the issue of information systems. The fine men who presented were as follows: Dr. Tibebe Beshah, Dr, Abeot Sinamo, Dr. Million Meshesha, Dr. Temtem Asefa and Mr. Zelalem Asefa.

After the presentation, the participants of the forum actively involved in an in depth discussion on the presented work. Everybody believes that Information systems play a great role in the life of Ethiopians; therefore, it is best if it is utilized by organizations. The ways forward in this field were also raised for discussion. Generally, the issue of the day draws to these two questions: in what direction is information systems going in Ethiopia? And, what has to be done to enhance the use of it?

In summing up the event, the Vice Academic President, Dr. Asrat Atsedwoyn, thanked all the participants of the workshop explaining that such workshops are vital to advance the field of information systems. Lastly he passed a strict and hopeful call to continue the work and advance this untapped venture.
