Occupational Therapy Job Fair Bridges Education and Employment Gap
On February 28, 2025, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Gondar successfully hosted an Occupational Therapy (OT) Job and Career Fair in Addis Ababa. The event aimed to connect graduating students from the University of Gondar’s OT program—the first of its kind in Ethiopia and accredited by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists—with potential employers in the field.

The fair was attended by representatives from federal and regional government offices, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, NGOs, charity organizations, as well as OT faculty and students. Notable attendees included Dr. Asrat Atsedeweyn, President of the University of Gondar; Dr. Kassahun Tegegne, Academic Vice President; Dr. Sandra den Otter, Vice Provost for Global Engagement at Queen’s University; and Dr. Molalign Belay and Prof. Heather Aldersey, Co-Directors of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.

This event was part of a broader initiative to advance the OT program at the University of Gondar. The partnership between the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, the University of Gondar, and Queen’s University in Canada has been instrumental in developing the field of rehabilitation science in Ethiopia, where occupational therapy is still emerging.

The OT Job and Career Fair offered graduating students valuable networking opportunities, career insights, and feedback on job search strategies, while also giving them the chance to share important insights on how OT plays a significant role across various healthcare settings. Similarly, the event allowed employers to connect with prospective graduates and skilled OT practitioners, helping bridge the gap between education and employment. The event also highlighted the growing demand for qualified OT professionals in Ethiopia and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration among the government, civil society, and the private sector to support the field.
Ahead of the job fair, Program staff and OT students visited the Ethiopian Prosthetic and Orthotic Service and Addis Guzo, a local charity organization, to emphasize the importance of hands-on experience in preparing students for careers in the rehabilitation sector. The students are expected to complete a one-month internship at EPOS’ Gefersa Rehab Center.

The success of this event further strengthened the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program’s commitment to transforming Ethiopia’s healthcare and rehabilitation sectors. It also highlighted the continued growth and sustainability of the Occupational Therapy field nationwide, while offering a roadmap for enhancing the OT program and its services at the University of Gondar.
