UoG Hosts the 9th Malaria Research Network Symposium
The 9th Malaria Research Network Symposium is held in The University of Gondar from November 28 -29 2010 at Science Amba Hall, CMHS. Welcoming all the participants, Dr. Sisay Yifru, dean of CHMS, reflected that there is no better place to host the event; the main reason being UoG’s commitment to fighting malaria. When the university was established as public health training college, it was to fight the malaria outbreak in the surroundings of Gondar.

Following the dean’s welcoming address, four guests made keynote speeches. Ms. Hiwot Teka, Malaria Advisor of President’s Malaria Initiative, noted that very aspiring deeds were achieved in the last couple of years. As she believes, this proves that a great shift can be brought to combat malaria. Dr.Adugna Woyessa, a malaria epidemiologist at EPHI, also made a keynote speech saying that all the participants will get fresh ideas concerning new issues on malaria in the symposium.
Prof. Yemane Berhane, Director of Addis Continental Institute of Public Health, stated that some innovative investigations are being done on malaria. In his keynote speech, Mr Dereje Dilu, NMPCEP/FMOH, stressed that such malaria research network symposium is vital to the current malaria situation.
During his opening speech, Dr. Asrat Atsedewoyn, Academic V/President of UoG, justified why the symposium can be significant. As Dr. Asrat explained, there was high malaria outbreak some sixty decades ago, and the then public health training college and the present university hospital was established to tackle the epidemic. However, the V/President added, there still exists such problems in the country and in Africa as well. Thus, the symposium is expected to be more important to share issues of research on malaria.
Different researchers and scholars presented their findings related to malaria. The presentations on the symposium mainly focused on malaria epidemiology and its entomology, malaria preventions, treatments and future malaria research network directions.
