UoG signs MOU with Karolinska Institute

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Karolinska Institute (Sweden) and the University of Gondar (Ethiopia) on 10 October 2017. The aim of the MOU is to produce a high quality Doctor of Philosophy in Midwifery program at UoG.

The goal of the program is to train professionals who will manage health service programs and women’s health activities at a regional and national level. In addition to this the PhD program will undertake research that will improve midwifery services and educate and formulate policies that improve women’s and children’s health.

Those who were present at the signing were, president delegate Dr. Asrat Atsedeweyn, Academic vice president of UoG, Dr. Sisay Yifru CMHS dean, Karolinska Institute representatives and staff from UoG’s midwifery department.

The program will provide key transferable skills in areas such as midwifery research, strategy and policy development, resource management in low resource settings, clinical audit and quality improvement in midwifery services.

The University of Gondar’s responsibilities in the final agreement will include, but are not limited to, providing funding for the program’s activities, provide organizational consultancy and to recruit and select trainers and trainees from its own academic departments.

Likewise, Karolinska Institute’s responsibilities will comprise providing high quality professors to educate professional courses for PhD midwifery candidates at the University of Gondar and to provide curriculum guidance and research advisor-ship to direct quality improvement for the sustainable growth of the department.

Karolinska Institute and the University of Gondar will be together for the next 4 years.

Karolinska Institute’s department of women’s and children’s health was founded in 1810. Based in Solna Sweden, KI is one of the largest and most prestigious medical universities in the world.
