On May 7–8, 2025, the European Union, through the OCEANS network, in collaboration with the University of Gondar, hosted a two-day workshop in Gondar, Ethiopia, titled “Empowering Networks: Alumni as Ambassadors for European Policies and Erasmus+ Integration.” Mr. Yenesew Alene, Project Coordinator, officially opened the event, emphasizing its key objectives: strengthening alumni engagement, enhancing institutional collaboration, and raising awareness about EU-funded programs. The workshop brought together students, alumni, university representatives, and EU stakeholders to explore a broad range of opportunities offered by European Union initiatives.
Participants had the chance to engage with some of the EU’s most prestigious programs, including EURAXESS, Horizon Europe, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, European Research Council (ERC) grants, Erasmus Mundus, Erasmus+, and the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme. These sessions provided valuable insights into how these programs support academic mobility, research collaboration, and institutional development across continents.
Dr. Adugna Abebe, a researcher and faculty member at the University of Gondar, shared his expertise on grant writing and project management, with a focus on navigating the EU Funding & Tenders Portal. Additionally, Mr. Yenesew Alene highlighted the vital role of the OCEANS network in fostering global academic cooperation, emphasizing how alumni can serve as ambassadors for Erasmus+ and European policies, thereby strengthening ties between African and European institutions.
Participants reported a marked improvement in their knowledge of Erasmus+ and other European initiatives, equipping them to act as informed ambassadors for these opportunities. They expressed confidence in their ability to promote and leverage European programs and policies within their communities.
The workshop facilitated meaningful engagement between alumni, academic institutions, and other partners, paving the way for future collaborations. The organizers and participants extended their sincere appreciation to the European Union for its generous funding, and to the Erasmus+ Support Service Team and ICF for their invaluable guidance.
