University of Gondar Joins Historic African Medical Education Consortium
The University of Gondar has been welcomed as a founding member of the Consortium of Medical Schools–Africa (COMS-A), a transformative network of over 115 medical schools from 34 countries. The consortium was launched during the MedEd Africa 2025 Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, marking a new chapter in the continent’s medical education landscape.
In a congratulatory message, COMS-A leadership commended the University’s commitment to academic excellence and regional collaboration. The consortium seeks to address critical challenges, such as faculty shortages, fragmented curricula, and limited research through standardized education, innovation, and strengthened institutional partnerships.
Joining COMS-A builds on the University of Gondar’s 100-year legacy in health sciences education and its pioneering role in Ethiopia’s medical training. This milestone reaffirms its leadership in advancing a unified, high-quality, and socially responsive medical education system across Africa.
