University of Gondar Spearheads EU-Funded 3is Project to Revolutionize Higher Education in Eastern Africa
The University of Gondar hosted an information session on May 14–15, 2025, marking a significant step forward for the Inclusive, Impactful, and Integrated Higher Education in Eastern Africa (3is) Project. This transformative initiative, funded by the European Union, brings together a consortium of universities, research institutions, and NGOs from Spain, Greece, Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia, all working towards systemic change in higher education across Eastern Africa.
The 3is Project focuses on several key areas: international partnerships, inclusiveness, innovative teaching methods, community engagement, and regional integration. Its primary goal is to create a more interconnected and future-ready academic landscape, driven by community engagement, industry partnerships, and stakeholder contributions.
Mr. Yenesew Alene, the project leader, highlighted several significant milestones already achieved. These include strengthening institutional capacities, facilitating knowledge exchange between European and African academics, and enhancing employability through industry-aligned curricula. These efforts are shaping the academic environment across the region, promoting research and innovation that aligns with regional development needs.
As the 3is Project continues to expand, it is poised to leave a lasting legacy in Eastern Africa. By creating a more inclusive learning environment for underrepresented groups, fostering innovation in teaching and research, and strengthening ties between African and European institutions, the project aims to build a brighter, more equitable future for higher education in the region.
“This initiative is more than just a program—it is a movement,” said Mr. Yenesew Alene. “By uniting diverse stakeholders, we are laying the foundation for a more inclusive, sustainable, and transformative academic future in Eastern Africa.”
With the backing of the EU and support from its consortium of leading institutions, the 3is Project is on track to ensure sustainable growth and long-term transformation for higher education in Eastern Africa.
