University of Gondar Partners with Belgian NGO for Biofertilizer Project
The University of Gondar has partnered with Wogen, a local NGO, and Nosissa, a Belgian organization specializing in agriculture, to launch an innovative biofertilizer project aimed at addressing the growing demand for fertilizers in Ethiopia. The collaboration, announced on March 4, 2025, is expected to have significant economic and environmental benefits.

Wogen, represented by Mrs. Hibste Mekonen, has been involved in community service initiatives, including support for orphans, financial assistance to single mothers, and agricultural development. Nosissa, led by Wilfred Van Bouwel, specializes on producing affordable biofertilizers to support sustainable agricultural practices.

On the occasion of the signing ceremony, Dr. Asrat Atsedeweyn, President of the University of Gondar, underscored the national demand for fertilizers and emphasized that this project is a key opportunity for faculty engagement, job creation, and import substitution. The collaboration aims to produce the first batch of biofertilizer using locally sourced biological components.
The partnership between the University of Gondar, Wogen and Nosissa builds on the university’s existing relationships with other Belgian institutions, such as the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp.
As we proudly celebrate the 70th anniversary of the University of Gondar and the 100th anniversary of our teaching hospital this year, we take this partnership to be a pivotal step in advancing agricultural practices in Ethiopia while supporting local economic growth and sustainability.
