
CMU-Africa Delegation Visits University of Gondar
On September 30, 2025, a delegation from Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa) visited the University of Gondar (UoG) as part of the AFRETEC initiative, which aims to accelerate Africa’s digital transformation. During the visit, the delegation toured key facilities including the Institute of Technology laboratories, the College of Informatics labs, and the ICT Data Center. They also held strategic discussions with faculty members, middle management, and UoG President, Dr. Asrat Atsedeweyn.

The visit underscored AFRETEC’s vision of transitioning Africa from a consumer of technology to a developer of it, with a strong emphasis on youth empowerment and the goal of cultivating 10,000 future technology leaders. Conversations focused on enhancing faculty quality, promoting research and innovation, and establishing pathways that connect education to sustainable employment.

The delegation highlighted the importance of Pan-African collaboration, the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in higher education, and the expansion of non-degree online certificate programs as tools for inclusive growth.
The University of Gondar expressed a strong interest in joining the AFRETEC network, aspiring to become its 10th member and contribute meaningfully to the continent’s digital future.
